DICC 2010

So this weekend, I went campinggggggggg!! Other than the frustration with in-experienced kids who didn't want to learn how to set-up/take-down camp... it was a good weekend! Though, we sort of expected it, they are all new kids! Plus they don't know us very well, so we sorta just let them play, anyway. We got to know all of the new kids, and they got to know us!

We had a lot of laughs, mostly at each other, and those are the best kind! Friendly laughs, of course. Taking first year kids to a camp, after having one meeting, is kinda hard! We didn't expect it to be so hard, but we all got through it! I think that it was one of the best ways to get to know new kids, then you get over those bumps at the VERY beginning of the year! It was pretty great. One great thing about Friday night was the sunset!! It was absolutely gorgeous!

Friday Night - It was windy.. soo windy!! 90 km/h winds!! But of course, it would not bee Dorchester without the bad weather!! OR THE RAIN..!! Anyways.. we managed to set camp up finally. We got all of the kids into their tents, and sent them to bed! Though we did not get the dining shelter set up that night, we set it up the next morning.. we didn't want the wind to blow it over during the night!! ... I could feel the tent touching my face while I was trying to sleep .. THE TOP OF THE TENT!!.. the winds were soo high that it was blowing the tent in half! yikes!

Saturday morning - We tried setting up the dining shelter, but ended up need assistance! Luckily Mildmay came to the rescue! The 3 of us tried to put the tarp on the dining shelter... didn't work! :( .. so what we ended up having to do yet another "make-shift-dining shelter" .. Because the one that we brought, was made out of the dining shelter that broke at the last Dorchester camp!! Anyways, we ended up only putting 2 tarps on the roof, just basically to shelter the stove from the all-around wind, and the shelter us and the kiddos from the rain! So this morning I ran an activity, board hockey, and Linna took the kids around the events. She was even nice enough to make me a fridge magnet and a button, because I couldn't go around with them!! She's so nice :) We ended up eating sundays breakfast, because didn't have our dining shelter up in time to make a hot breakfast!

 

Saturday afternoon -  So this afternoon, we spent most of our time, again at crafts, and I took some of the kids to the haunted house. I ended up only taking through 1 out of 2, which is perfectly fine, I sent him back about half way. I was pretty proud of him for trying! So this afternoon we had a delicious lunch of grilled cheese and chicken soup! That was soo good!! some other events we did in the afternoon was, knife throwing, wreath decorating and decorating short-bread cookies!.. If you're wondering why some of these activities are Christmas based..is because we had a christmas theme this year!

Saturday Evening - So for dinner we WERE going to so something quick as easy simply because it's camp and that would be the easy way to go. Well instead of that we went with a christmas theme dinner! We had chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and stuffing! All of that was accompanied with sparkling grape juice!! Wow we are great leaders! Haha. This wasn't all that hard to make, because we got all of the instant stuff.. And we bought the chicken precooked, and we just took it off of the bones and fried it up! Boy that was delicious! Tonight the camp had a special visitor! SANTA CLAUS! He was handing out presents! Gosh our kids are lucky little kids! :) Tonight our kids were in bed by 8! Boy that was nice!

 

Sunday Morning - This morning we had our Saturday morning breakfast since we switched it up the day before! So, again in honor of christmas we had green eggs and ham! Because we are thinkers! Ha!! And yep, you're right, this was pretty good too! Well it would have been, if children were packing, and we didn't have to keep leaving breakfast unattended, to encourage children to pack! .. so we burnt the eggs! BUT we filled up their bellies with oatmeal and bagels! One thing the kids learned for next time was, you are packed before breakfast!.... Or your tent is coming down on top of you, and it's much harder to pack with the tent on your head!

This year at Dorchester there were approx 597 people there!, not including staff! I think the kid total was, 450! THAT IS A LOT OF KIDS... though the DIBC camp is about 1000 people more... But DICC is right at the beginning of the year, plus it's more difficult to bring first year cubs, than first year scouts, so a lot of the packs bring only their experienced kids, we experimented and took all of them! In front of the stage there is 1 kid representing each group! :) In the background, the monkey, the bear, the elephant and the pink panther are the mascots of the sub camps. Again, this year we were in elephant!
